Bystander Intervention & Support
A bystander refers to an individual who is not directly involved in an event of sexual or gender-based violence (SGBV), but may be:
1. present during the incident of SGBV.
2. a witness to the incident of SGBV.
3. an observer who has noted a set of events that has led to an incidence of SGBV.
4. a spectator or source of support when the SGBV survivor recounts their experiences or actively seeks support services.
This section will provide support to bystanders of sexual and gender-based violence by normalizing certain reactions bystanders may experience while observing an instance of SGBV or supporting a survivor, and will highlight expectations bystanders can have while seeking support services for second-hand trauma.
